Broccoli Led by Breeder

Broccoli Led by Breeder Barry Fararra, Enza Zaden’s broccoli program is in growth mode. Fararra works out of California with Junior Breeder Miguel Macias, with global support from additional researchers in Australia, Spain, Holland and Italy. The team’s extensive combined experience, and their commitment to develop new hybrids with superior heat tolerance and disease resistance, has their sights set on brassicas leadership for Enza Zaden. Broccoli Corato F1 Corato produces dark green large heads with tight lobes. The plant grows strongly and produces heads after 70-72 days from sowing. Corato performs well even under hot conditions keeping an attractive floret structure with good market presentation. It is recommended for the main season in all major broccoli growing regions. For 2019, Enza Zaden’s broccoli variety Corato demonstrates the foundational genetics to be reflected in future varieties. Dark green Corato performs well in all conditions, including under heat, while maintaining an attractive floret structure. Uniquely informed by market insights, pipeline initiatives include expanded work on heat tolerance for the whole head market served by growers in Spain and California, and strong resistance to disease pressure, particularly for the floret market served by Mexican growers. Both Fararra and Macias enjoy the complexities of broccoli breeding, and say they could not have a better team, or be more excited about the future for brassicas at Enza Zaden.
